FAQ
Q: How did My Tech High begin?
A: A group of parents realized there just weren't enough fun, engaging resources to help their children learn technology and entrepreneurship, so we decided to do something about it. Our first program launched in September 2009 and taught over 200 students!
Q: What's the long-term goal of My Tech High?
A: Our goal is to create a "Perpetual Education Cycle" for our country's tech-savvy teens. First, we will teach them the practical skills and knowledge needed to help them get a job NOW to save money for college. Then, as they graduate, we can provide them financial and other resources needed to launch their own tech start-up company. As they expand, we'll invite them to "give-back" by hiring the next-generation of our tech-savvy teens. This cycle will keep the good, innovative, hi-tech jobs right here in the USA!
Q: Who can enroll in My Tech High courses?
A: We primarily focus on youth ages 10-18, but the courses are actually open for anyone interested.
Q: Will my student get a free laptop for enrolling?
A: For students enrolled with one of our charter school partners, there is an annual technology allowance that can help families purchase what they need most. Examples include a new computer, laptop, monitor, external hard drive, web cam, mic/headset, etc.
Q: Can I just take Math, Science, History and Language classes from you?
A: No. Our main focus is hi-tech education and then we provide the flexibility for our families to access whatever additional resources they prefer.
Q: Is My Tech High a Public Charter School or a Private School?
A: Neither. We simply partner with local schools and home school families to help them provide teen-friendly technology courses to their students and youth. We also offer these hi-tech courses directly from us for a cost of $495/class to anyone interested.
Q: Will my courses appear on a transcript and count toward a high school diploma?
A: Yes – those enrolled in our full program are virtual students of a Utah Public Charter School. As such, all courses will appear on an official transcript from that school. In order to earn a full diploma, you'll need to meet with the School Counselor (in-person or on the phone) to ensure you have all the credits required. Also, all full-program students must participate in the mandatory year-end state tests.
Q: Is there a way to get a waiver for the course fee?
A: Yes. Through our public charter school partnerships, home schooled students who aren't enrolled in any other school can join our tuition-free program (some restrictions apply).
Q: How do I create an account in the Online Learning System?
A: Create your account in our Online Learning System. Specific course enrollment will open one week prior to the semester start date.
Q: How does my student get the software required in the courses?
A: The student is responsible to purchase the software directly. However, for students enrolled with one of our charter school partners, the cost of the software will be reimbursed 100% if purchased from our online store: www.deals4edu.com (select K-12, Utah, Hi-Tech High). Also, we don't want cost to be an issue for any student to access these great courses. Contact us for potential private scholarships, if needed.
Q: Are there online mentors available for students to ask questions?
A: Yes. We recognize that one of the key parts of any educational experience is the ability to ask questions of an expert. Our trained and experienced online mentors are available throughout the week via email, chat and phone. Each mentor also typically schedules a live, weekly, online "Tech Talk" where students gather to discuss what they are learning and can receive helpful feedback on their projects. A state-certified teacher and a school counselor are also available for support.
Q: Do you ever have face-to-face events for this group of "tech-savvy teens" to meet each other?
A: Yes. We usually schedule a Student Showcase Family Night during the year where students and their families get to gather with others interested in technology and share their amazing projects. Showcase Nights have been some of the most enjoyable moments of the year. We also invite students to attend local entrepreneurial events that often occur in the area.
Q: Will a basic Windows computer system be adequate or do I need to buy a heavy duty machine?
A: A standard Windows computer system with high-speed internet access works great – no need to buy a heavy duty machine.
Q: How many hours per week is expected and are students required to attend the live "Tech Talks"?
A: On average, students spend between 2-5 hours per week per course. We also strongly encourage students to attend the weekly live "Tech Talks" to connect with other students and their tech mentor, but those sessions are not required.
